Understand your journey

Clear, plain-language guides to gender care in the UK — written to inform and reassure, never to push you in any direction.

Gender care in the UK is not one system but several, and working out which door to knock on is often the hardest part. These five guides set out what is actually involved, in plain language: what gender dysphoria is and isn't, what affirming therapy and assessment do, the forms transition can take, what gender-affirming surgery involves, and how the NHS and private routes to care in the UK work.

There is no right order to read them in. If you are near the beginning, or supporting someone who is, start with understanding dysphoria — it explains why being trans or non-binary is not a mental illness, and why exploring is not the same as deciding. If you already know what you want and are trying to work out how to get it, start with accessing care: GP referrals, choosing a clinic, and what the private route does and does not change.

NHS waiting lists in England often run to several years, which is why none of this is only about paperwork. Support during that wait is one of the most useful things therapy offers. Every guide cites the NHS and established organisations it draws on, and carries the date it was last reviewed, so you can see how current it is — and the FAQ answers the shorter questions people ask most.
