How therapy & psychological support helps
What affirming therapy is (and what it is not), the difference from an assessment, and how it can support you at any stage.
Therapy with a gender-affirming psychologist is a confidential, non-judgemental space to explore your identity, feelings and choices. It is led by you and your goals — never an attempt to change who you are.
Affirming therapy is not conversion therapy
What therapy can help with
- Exploring your gender at your own pace, with no pressure to reach a conclusion
- Coping with dysphoria, anxiety, low mood or the stress of waiting lists
- Navigating coming out to family, partners, friends or your workplace
- Building confidence and resilience in the face of discrimination or minority stress
- Relationship, family and couples support as everyone adjusts
- Processing earlier experiences, including trauma, in a safe and affirming way
Therapy vs. an assessment
These are two different things, and it helps to know which you need:
- 1
Therapy / counselling
Ongoing psychological support focused on your wellbeing and goals. You can start whenever you like — before, during or after any medical steps, or with no medical steps at all.
- 2
A gender dysphoria assessment
A structured clinical assessment that explores your history and goals. It may be used to support access to medical pathways or to provide a professional report. It is a specific piece of work with a clear purpose.
